How Are Your Basics?

HOW ARE YOUR BASICS?

Lush

On Friday, I visited the Better Homes and Gardens Show with my exhibiting business partner, Danielle Storey to work with one of our exhibiting clients. There were loads of exhibitors all trying their best to get their message across and stand out from their competition or at the very least, stand out to their prospects.

Well… I guarantee you that they THOUGHT they were trying their best but most of them were missing the basics.

  • They didn’t smile (this is the easiest thing to do but most don’t)
  • It took as 2/3rds of the show until one of the exhibitors engaged with us
  • So many were sitting down looking at their laptop or phones as people walked past

Others were doing the basics really well.

  • Crisp looking stands
  • Friendly faces with welcoming comments
  • Themed qualifying give aways

What about you Friends? Whether it is for your exhibiting effort or in what you are doing right now, are you doing the basics?
Get the basics right and it will make a world of difference.

PS You can see a few photos and a video review of the Better Homes and Gardens show on our blog.

Here is Your Present

High Tea

Here Is Your Present

As you know, it was my birthday last week. I had a fabulous three day festival to celebrate including a High Tea which was rather posh! It was also fabulous to hear how people had passed on my birthday wishes to others with some fantastic reactions.

Today I wanted to give you a present.

It is a simple two page worksheet that helps you celebrate the year past and look forward to the coming year. I call it my Birthday Bash. It will only take you 10 minutes to complete but it will return far more value. To get your copy just click here.

Happy Birthday from me to you!

Happy Birthday Time

Happy Birthday Time

Birthday Pic

I am having one of my favourite kinds of years. It’s one where I have a birthday.

Some people know that it is my birthday this week on Friday 19th April. It’s not a big one, it’s just another average, everyday kind of birthday. The kind of birthday where all of your friends wish you “all the best”. Especially now that Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and every other kind of social media tells everyone it’s your birthday. You get some fabulous wishes from random people you hardly know!

Here’s the thing.

My life is pretty awesome. I’m not bragging, it’s just a fact. I have a fabulous wife, a great business, good health, fun toys, loving family, stupendous friends, a cool choir and I have great experiences. So as much as I love these birthday wishes, I don’t really need them. But loads of other people do.

You see them looking grumpy in meetings, walking down the street, in the supermarket and even in elevators. So I had a cunning plan, why not give all of these fabulous birthday wishes to people who really need them?

I get it sounds a bit whacky and the kind of thing that ends up on a dodgy TV show, but I really don’t care. I think it was Eleanor Roosevelt who said, “What other people think of me is none of my business.”

I really would like everyone to give my birthday wish to those who need them more. So I need your help.

This week, whenever you get the urge to wish me a happy birthday, give it to someone else. Give it to a random stranger, a work colleague, someone you love, someone you like, someone you have a slight distaste for, someone you have a crush on, the check out person, the person in the car next to you – it doesn’t really matter who, just be sure to give it. Give to them as genuine a wish as you would have for me for a year full of joy, magic and delights. You may shake their hand, hug them, kiss them, wave at them or simply smile at them.

You may give a speech even! Something like, “On behalf of Warwick, I would like to give his best birthday wishes to you. May you have a fantastic celebration of life today.” It may be smaller. Something like, “Dude!” It doesn’t really matter, what is important is the intent.

Who could ask for a better birthday present? So Friends will you help me?

Warts and All

This was not at the conference but you get the idea!

I have spent four days at the National Speakers conference. It’s my professional association so even though I was the Master of Ceremonies at the Gala Dinner and had a job as the “Voice of God” throughout the conference, it is also the time to go behind the scenes of my skill, my business model, my approach and do some fine tuning.

Staying at the conference hotel is also a bit of a shock. Hotel bathrooms seem to have more mirrors than any other surface. So after the daily shower, I was confronted with myself, warts and all, from all possible angles. Now I don’t know about you, but having that kind of perspective of myself is quite uncomfortable. My vision is drawn to my defects or PERCEIVED defects and things that I don’t like about myself. The conference was the same for my business.

It was too easy to see and hear what others were doing and think, “I’m not doing that. I should be doing what they are doing. There is something else I am not doing right. Look at all the stuff I haven’t done or achieved.”

From personal experience, that is not healthy and it gets you nowhere.

After a detailed discussion with my business partner, we have drawn a line in the sand (a sentiment reinforced by one of the speakers) and will only look to the future, acknowledge the past and act in the present. So there are a few bits about my body and my business that I am not a fan of. Rather than sitting on my pity pot and thinking about them, it is time for action and change. I can accept where I am at, warts and all. Now it is time for the action to meet the goals and the focus.

What about you? What changes do you want? What action will you take?

expensive displays, a lot of booked appointments taking place, interesting marketing approaches (I am not sure the almost-nude model painting achieved what they were after) but I walked away stunned, shocked and surprised (See image for details!)

The main reason is that after spending a ton of money on booths, flights, accommodation, meals, marketing collateral what they didn’t spend money on was…. their people.

It wasn’t until I was half way around the show that someone actually engaged. When they did, it was from one of the smallest stands with the most simplistic set up, but they got my attention and we had a great conversation.

So how do you engage? It doesn’t have to be a trade show, it can be at a networking event, a random conversation with a friend, an opportunity in the foyer of an office or a simple phone conversation. “How are you today?” is a good starter (or even a good default position), but I KNOW you can do better.

If you are after some tips, we are running a fr*ee webinar tomorrow. You can register at www.EASI-Money.com

A New Secret!

People often search for the secret to:
  • Learning new skills
  • Business success
  • Happy marriage
  • Property investing
  • Creating the perfect meal
  • On stage performance, and
  • Many other things.

This is a lesson I got from my Bass teacher Aurora Jane. She said you have to have the right “Bass Face.”
I think the lesson transfers to everything.

What do you think?

How Do You Measure Success?

Measure
Be honest, how do you measure success. Not how do you think you should measure it, but how

you really do. Typically it is by money. Sometimes it is by the impact you have on others and other times it is purely how you feel.

Success is worth considering. What it is, what it means to you and how it drives you.

Too often in the business world people don’t measure success because it is too hard. In particular this happens in the Exhibiting and Event Sponsorship world. Thousands are spent and then written off as a “Branding” exercise.

So what is success for you and how will you measure it?

PS If you need help in measuring Success in the Exhibiting and Event Sponsorship field, join us for a webinar on Wednesday or visit the webinar series website www.EASI-Money.com

Why Are You Paying For It?

Let me pay
Why Are You Paying For It?

Many business run different events. They could be internal team building, internal state of the nation, external marketing events or simply a client get together with some valuable information presented. My question for you is “Why are you paying for it?”

It is increasingly accepted by participants that there will be an event sponsor. The big sporting events are even named after them, KFC cricket, KIA tennis, NAB football, this list goes on.

So why not you?

I recently ran an event for 30 prospects with my business partner. We had a sponsor cover the costs of the event (minimising risk for us). The sponsor had his suppliers give him promotional materials for all participants and he got to address and network with his target market (and has since signed up new clients from the event).

My challenge for you is to get a sponsor for you next event that minimises your risk, enhances your event and even pays for the event. Why are you paying for it?

PS If you want to find out more about how to get or how to be a sponsor, join us tomorrow on our f r e e  EASI Money – Sponsorship webinar. Register here.

How Good Is Your Call To Action?

Signage
I spoke to a school group this morning. On the way there I saw a delivery van covered with signage on their products. There was lots of colour and pictures but the sign that stood out was words saying

“Book with me Now!”

My initial response was ‘Book what?’

You see their signage got attention but you could not tell at a glance what it was for. With signage on a vehicle that moves at somewhere between 40 and 100 km/h you have to be able to understand it in a single glance.

This is a principle that I share with clients in my Exhibiting work. Can you tell at a glance what your stand is about?
It is equally applicable to the action line on an email. If the recipient cannot understand what you want from them at a glance, then you need to rework your call to action.

Are you getting the response you want with your “Call to Action?”

PS Be careful with abbreviations too. This sign was taken by a friend of mine in the USA and I don’t think it says what they want it to!

Are You Trained?

BriefingAre You Trained?

I spent three days last week locked in a room with other similar minded entrepreneurs. Well maybe not locked but you get what I mean. We were looking at how to transform our businesses and take them to the next level (or even the one beyond that). The final day was planning and commitments for 2013 with an action plan to help get us there
.
As a business owner it can be hard to dedicate this kind of time for additional training and development.

As an employee as well, there is always too much to do to spend time off getting training and development.

I have heard it said by many business gurus, “Too many managers say What if I train my employees and they leave, but what if you don’t train them and they stay!”

By the way, don’t wait for others to pay for or approve your training either. If you really want it or need it, be prepared to finance it yourself, after all, you get to keep it!

So what training do you need? What skills do you need to develop? What will you do TODAY to make that happen?

PS Tomorrow night (Tuesday 4th December) we will be hosting the 5 Keys to Successful Exhibiting training from 6pm in Doncaster. Be my guest and use the promo code EASCOMP for your ticket at my expense. To register or find out more details, visit EASInstitute.Eventbrite.com

Want More Sales?

Rego Desk
Want More Sales?
There seems to be so many people out there spruiking the short cuts to more customers and more sales. Let me be honest with you, there is no short cut!

The best way to increase your sales and customer based is with focussed attention on the key methods that work and measuring your efforts and results in the process. The Centre for Exhibiting Industry Research found that Exhibiting and Event Sponsorship has one of the lowest costs per lead when compared to traditional marketing methods.

Now as you will know from previous posts, I am also a huge fan of Exhibiting and the results it brings but it is easy to get it very wrong!

THE BIGGEST MISTAKE

The biggest mistake people make is that they have no idea why they are exhibiting. They may know in loose terms but they have no idea how to measure it. As the adage says, “What gets measured gets improved.” So when you next exhibiting, you MUST know your why and how you will measure it otherwise you are wasting your money.

My joint ventu
re business The Exhibiting and Sponsorship Institute is just about to launch our new product, the Exhibit Like A Pro 12 Disc pack. We are launching it by running a 2 1/2 hr workshop on how to Exhibit Like A Pro on Tuesday 4th December. We are starting in Melbourne and next February we have a tour of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. To find out more or to register, click here. I would love to see you there.

Are You Flexible?

OMG! Can you believe it? I stuffed up.

I live in Melbourne and didn’t realise that I had scheduled my How to Create and Deliver a Great Introduction webinar smack bang in the middle of Melbourne Cup Day. Naturally I only found out about this just after I had sent the newsletter to over 1,500 people!

So a few quick tinkerings of the system and voila, it is now on this Wednesday at 1pm Melbourne time. If you want to be part of it, the webinar detail and registration is here

What about you? When you find out about a problem can you let go of control enough to be flexible? Can you release the idea of what you wanted to happen and come up with a solution that will suit? From a cancelled meeting to a cancelled contract, anything can happen. As has been said so many times, it is not what happens to you but how you deal with it that counts. So are you flexible enough to deal with what happens to you?

What About Me?

Warwick MC

One of my personal bug bears is when an MC says, “And now for a person who needs no introduction…” and then spends five minutes introducing them! Most of us have been to meetings or networking functions where people are introduced by their resume (at least it feels like they are reading their resume.)

Here is the secret of a brilliant introduction: the introduction is NOT about the person you are introducing. What people forget is that the introduction means more to the AUDIENCE that the presenter.

That is not just for presentations either. Think about when you are introduced to someone at a networking event. What has more value to you?
“This is Jill Jones she is the CEO of Jones International”
OR
“This is Jill Jones. Her business specialises in graphic design and branding. I recall you saying you were looking at yours recently.”
In the second introduction you will love the context you get about Jill and Jill loves the referral the introducer is giving her.

So how are your introductions?

If you want better introductions, join me on Wednesday 7th November for a complimentary webinar on How to Create and Deliver a Great Introduction. If you can’t make that time, no worries, simply register and you will get access to the recording.
