Why Survive when you can Thrive?

Why Survive When You Can Thrive?

Speaking with some of my clients and associates it seems there is a bit of fear in the market place.

There is fear about:

  • The election and which way it will go
  • What the new/old government means
  • The exchange rate
  • The Europen economies
  • The impact of the internet on retail
  • Cost of raising kids
  • Cost of health care
  • Cost of living
  • Cost of dying
  • Cost of retirement
  • Cost of getting new sales
  • Cost of growing business
  • And the list goes on… and on … and on …

Have a look at that list again and add any items that are going around in your head.

Notice anything?

They are the same situations that exist – no matter what. All being fearful and worrying about it does is shut down your mind to the opportunities and stop you from doing what you need to to have a fabulous business, job and life.

Shift your focus from Survive to Thrive. Look for ways and ideas to make today your best day ever. History is littered with examples of companys that have grown out of a recession.

Take action and make it count.

What Haven’t You Said?

What Haven’t You Said?

I had misinterpreted a clients email. You know when you put meaning in an email that isn’t there? So I didn’t get in touch.

… time passed …

Now whenever I thought of the client I started thinking, “I really should give them a call”

… time passed …

I found great ways to sidetrack myself from the call and now it was six months later so I put some back stop methods in place to be sure I called.

  • I called
  • Then I visited and took responsibility for my stuff.
  • The client then signed up for more of my services (they had been waiting for me to call!).

Friends whether it is a client you haven’t called, a friend you haven’t spoken to or a loved one you need to say something too, don’t leave it unsaid. The rewards and peace of mind will ALWAYS outweigh the discomfort.

So what haven’t you said?

Who Is Your Signage For?

Who Is Your Signage For?

A client asked me to have a look at their banner designs for an upcoming trade show. They were nice looking designs but they were nothing special. Too often we forget that our banners and our signage is not about us. They are about our clients and our prospects.

Here are a few thoughts for you on signage.

  • What is the purpose of the banner? Is it to reinforce your brand, is it to attract prospects or is it to give a clean back drop for your booth. There are many reasons. Understand why you want them.
  • The bottom half of Pull up banners are irrelevant. The majority of the time someone is standing in front of them and you can’t see it. The top half is what will attract the attention
  • Banners are not about words. Too many people try and put the “About Us” section from their website on their banners. NO ONE CARES!! Put some eye catching images or bold sentences that inspire the prospect to come and talk to you.
  • Can you connect to it? A prospect or customer needs to be able to look at the banner and think “I want that” or “That’s me”. That will then encourage them to come and discover more about what you offer.

For example, here is one of my banners from the Exhibiting and Sponsorship Institute at a recent event that we sponsored.

Exhibit Like A Pro

Notice our brand and website are at the top followed by three statements that are easy to read from a distance. These statement are ones that our prospects can relate to and also desire.

This banner is usually going to be on stage when we speak, so we are more likely to have the bottom half read but see how here the final statement is almost hidden behind the table (it was the least important of the three so that is why we put it there)

So Friends how is your signage?

Have You Got A Card?

Have You Got A Card?

My CardI was at a friends birthday party on the weekend. It was a fantastic event and I was sitting with some people I had never met before.
Now as usual, we started talking about what we did. It’s a standard opener, “So what do you do?” You have probably used it yourself.
Well it didn’t take long until we were chatting away full steam and we coming up with ideas on how to increase her business. It only made sense after talking business to ask for her business card and give her one of mine.

Then I shuffled seats. Again the conversation started, “So what do you do?” And we were off and racing (in fact, he is into horses and runs a horse magazine). A few more ideas and then it was “So do you have a business card?”

While I am not saying you should turn every function into a business meeting, I am saying that you need to have your cards ready. If you are like me and are passionate about what you do and how you may be able to help others, why wouldn’t you give a business card. Much to wifey’s dismay, I have even swapped business cards at a funeral!

Now while you probably don’t need them as much now as you can put details in your phone, it is always great to have them handy. (I am often surprised at people who go to networking events without a stack of business cards. What the..?) I was taught years ago, that a business card in your wallet gets crushed. So I have a stash of them in the special pocket of each suit jacket, the glove box of the car, my compendium, my card holder and some reserve in my wallet. It pays to be ready if ever someone asks, “So what do you do?” or “Have you got a card?”

So Friends, have you got a card?

Is It Engaging?

Is It Engaging?

I was working at the AUSTECH 2013 tradeshow run by AMTIL last week. It had some huge and amazing equipment on site. Laser cutters, sheetmetal stampers, 3D printers and loads of other great technology. It was a really great show. But regardless of the technology, whatever you have, you need to be able to make it engaging. Either get the prospects attention or get them asking questions about what you are doing.
Here are a couple of highlights from AusTech for you:
1 – Bolt Welding.
Why tell someone what your machine can do when you can show them. Here is an 8 second video of the bolt welder in action.
Click to Play
2 – Peen Hammer
Why show them what you can do when you can let them do it.
The Peen Hammer you see in Cassie’s hand is used to punch details on to steel. In this demonstration you can type in your name or any word you want, then then stamp it on the wall. If you zoom in on the top centre of the wall you will see my name proudly stamped (it’s good to be tall).
Hall of Fame
3 – Large Australian Manufacturer
This well known manufacturer and supplier to industry decided that they didn’t want to be there all day so they left this sign on their booth. To me it was a colossal waste of money. For the sake of one staff member to positively promote the brand, get interested details and engage with the public, surely it would have been worth it.
Why Bother?
When you are in the market place, either at an expo, face to face or even on social media, ask yourself the simple question, is it engaging?

How Are Your Basics?

HOW ARE YOUR BASICS?

Lush

On Friday, I visited the Better Homes and Gardens Show with my exhibiting business partner, Danielle Storey to work with one of our exhibiting clients. There were loads of exhibitors all trying their best to get their message across and stand out from their competition or at the very least, stand out to their prospects.

Well… I guarantee you that they THOUGHT they were trying their best but most of them were missing the basics.

  • They didn’t smile (this is the easiest thing to do but most don’t)
  • It took as 2/3rds of the show until one of the exhibitors engaged with us
  • So many were sitting down looking at their laptop or phones as people walked past

Others were doing the basics really well.

  • Crisp looking stands
  • Friendly faces with welcoming comments
  • Themed qualifying give aways

What about you Friends? Whether it is for your exhibiting effort or in what you are doing right now, are you doing the basics?
Get the basics right and it will make a world of difference.

PS You can see a few photos and a video review of the Better Homes and Gardens show on our blog.

expensive displays, a lot of booked appointments taking place, interesting marketing approaches (I am not sure the almost-nude model painting achieved what they were after) but I walked away stunned, shocked and surprised (See image for details!)

The main reason is that after spending a ton of money on booths, flights, accommodation, meals, marketing collateral what they didn’t spend money on was…. their people.

It wasn’t until I was half way around the show that someone actually engaged. When they did, it was from one of the smallest stands with the most simplistic set up, but they got my attention and we had a great conversation.

So how do you engage? It doesn’t have to be a trade show, it can be at a networking event, a random conversation with a friend, an opportunity in the foyer of an office or a simple phone conversation. “How are you today?” is a good starter (or even a good default position), but I KNOW you can do better.

If you are after some tips, we are running a fr*ee webinar tomorrow. You can register at www.EASI-Money.com

How Do You Move?

Moving Trolley
I learnt a long time ago that you never move FROM a place, you move TO a place.

What I mean by that is that when you move always consider what you need in the new place. Too many people pack everything in boxes, get to the new location and find out that they don’t need everything they have moved or boxes sit unpacked for years and you don’t miss what is in the box.

It could be a change of office, house or even position in the company. Decide what you will need in the new place and only take what you need with you. The rest can be recycled, handed on or thrown away.
So how do you move?

Time to practice what I preach.

I am moving office. As such, I have some old products that I don’t want to take with me. Some will no longer be available and others I just don’t want to transport! So I thought I would have a moving sale and give you the chance at some bargains.

you really do. Typically it is by money. Sometimes it is by the impact you have on others and other times it is purely how you feel.

Success is worth considering. What it is, what it means to you and how it drives you.

Too often in the business world people don’t measure success because it is too hard. In particular this happens in the Exhibiting and Event Sponsorship world. Thousands are spent and then written off as a “Branding” exercise.

So what is success for you and how will you measure it?

3D Printing on Your Desk

How cool!

I just checked out this video from FormLabs about their 3D printers.

To me it is more than 3D printing.
It is manufacturing on a small scale.
It is unleashing creativity.
It is lifting ideas off the page
It is enabling the next level.

Think of the leap for musicians when they could create their own high quality CDs using their computers and back room. All of a sudden designers and artists can effortlessly create their pieces.

Image: www.Formlabs.com

Think of the personalised items you could create at Trade Shows and Expos to engage with your visitors.
Think of the modelling you could do to solve engineer issues.
Think of the cool bass guitar picks your could create!

What would you do with your very own 3D printer?

Why Are You Paying For It?

Let me pay
Why Are You Paying For It?

Many business run different events. They could be internal team building, internal state of the nation, external marketing events or simply a client get together with some valuable information presented. My question for you is “Why are you paying for it?”

It is increasingly accepted by participants that there will be an event sponsor. The big sporting events are even named after them, KFC cricket, KIA tennis, NAB football, this list goes on.

So why not you?

I recently ran an event for 30 prospects with my business partner. We had a sponsor cover the costs of the event (minimising risk for us). The sponsor had his suppliers give him promotional materials for all participants and he got to address and network with his target market (and has since signed up new clients from the event).

My challenge for you is to get a sponsor for you next event that minimises your risk, enhances your event and even pays for the event. Why are you paying for it?

PS If you want to find out more about how to get or how to be a sponsor, join us tomorrow on our f r e e  EASI Money – Sponsorship webinar. Register here.

How Good Is Your Call To Action?

Signage
I spoke to a school group this morning. On the way there I saw a delivery van covered with signage on their products. There was lots of colour and pictures but the sign that stood out was words saying

“Book with me Now!”

My initial response was ‘Book what?’

You see their signage got attention but you could not tell at a glance what it was for. With signage on a vehicle that moves at somewhere between 40 and 100 km/h you have to be able to understand it in a single glance.

This is a principle that I share with clients in my Exhibiting work. Can you tell at a glance what your stand is about?
It is equally applicable to the action line on an email. If the recipient cannot understand what you want from them at a glance, then you need to rework your call to action.

Are you getting the response you want with your “Call to Action?”

PS Be careful with abbreviations too. This sign was taken by a friend of mine in the USA and I don’t think it says what they want it to!

Want More Sales?

Rego Desk
Want More Sales?
There seems to be so many people out there spruiking the short cuts to more customers and more sales. Let me be honest with you, there is no short cut!

The best way to increase your sales and customer based is with focussed attention on the key methods that work and measuring your efforts and results in the process. The Centre for Exhibiting Industry Research found that Exhibiting and Event Sponsorship has one of the lowest costs per lead when compared to traditional marketing methods.

Now as you will know from previous posts, I am also a huge fan of Exhibiting and the results it brings but it is easy to get it very wrong!

THE BIGGEST MISTAKE

The biggest mistake people make is that they have no idea why they are exhibiting. They may know in loose terms but they have no idea how to measure it. As the adage says, “What gets measured gets improved.” So when you next exhibiting, you MUST know your why and how you will measure it otherwise you are wasting your money.

My joint ventu
re business The Exhibiting and Sponsorship Institute is just about to launch our new product, the Exhibit Like A Pro 12 Disc pack. We are launching it by running a 2 1/2 hr workshop on how to Exhibit Like A Pro on Tuesday 4th December. We are starting in Melbourne and next February we have a tour of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. To find out more or to register, click here. I would love to see you there.
