Are They That Different?

Are they that different?
I am consistently surprised at the culture shock I get when I travel to the USA. I keep thinking we are so similar (and we are) but we are also so different.

It’s easy to spot some differences. They drive on a different side of the road and a different side of the car. They have money that is all the same colour. They spell colour without the “u”. But these are the easy ones.

Some of the more subtle or peculiar ones are: they use their cutlery differently (especially how they hold a fork), their food looks like ours but tastes different, their coffee is NOT coffee and their approach to customer service is very different to ours.

It would be easy to get in to a “whose is best” kind of discussion and the answer is no-ones. Each approach is not better simply different. Sometimes it is easy to see the differences like the ones mentioned, but there are others that are not that easy to see.  This is not just between cultures, it’s also between people.

This is where a behavioural preference tool like DISC comes in handy. They enable you to consider others (like a partner, colleague, client or prospect) and determine how they like to behave and communicate.  You can then change your style to match theirs. This will enable you to have much more effective communication and better relationships.

DO NOT try and make them change to suit you.  Many have tried and failed.  You can never change others, only yourself.  The truth is that people are VERY different, regardless of cultural background.  Behavioural flexibility will increase your chance of success.

Are You Used To It?

Mt Hood

I am here in Portland Oregon for work. Yesterday I took a drive out to the Colorado River Gorge. I call it drive by tourism. I took some photos as I drove. If you look past the bugs on the windscreen you will see Mt Hood in the background. I was blown away to be driving around and have this amazing snow capped mountain in the background.

I guarantee you that many locals will not even see it. We get used to things and don’t notice how special they are. It is not taking it for granted, because I am sure the locals love it, it is just that you see it so often you get used to it and it blends into the background.

Are some of your customers, your team members, your support staff or your family the same? I am sure you know how special they are, how much they mean to you but it is easy to get used to having them around and having them do things for you.

So are you Used To It? Make sure they know how much they mean to you and your business.

Lessons for the Lazy Traveller

As some of you may know, I am off to the USA for some work.

With all of the recent ash cloud sagas, my first concern was getting off the ground!  In fact, after a long wait, my 6am flight got cancelled.

I thought I would be on hold for ages and it would just be one long nightmare trying to get away. Ah the delights of Qantas!! I was on hold for about 3 minutes.  After a few more minutes on hold, the delightful reservations person had me on the direct flight leaving at 9am (rather than the one that goes via New Zealand at 6am) and had shuffled my connecting flight so I was only delayed by about 2 hrs.

YAY!!!

I was so excited.  No rude getting to the airport at 3am – I could be there at 6am!  No 3 hr stop over in Auckland, simple straight line flight to LAX.  It was almost too good to be true!!

And then I got to the airport!!

I was so excited to go, and I am only a boy so I don’t need much stuff, that I was able to pack everything I needed for the 12 days into my carry on bag. The plan is to do some shopping to get more cloths and so on and buy a new suitcase to bring it home.  How slick was I!!  The Lazy Traveller!  No waiting around for luggage for this little black duck!!

If only I could have chosen the security guard!!

Check in was a breeze.  Then went I went into the customs area, a security guard said he had to weigh my bag.  At 13kg it was too heavy and I had to go back to check in.  My little balloon of re-scheduled happiness burst and I plummeted to travelling hassle reality!!

I got back in the check in queue, which had grown dramatically.  The security guard has said, they may issue it with a sticker and I would be fine. The Qantas checkin person had no idea what I was talking about. She presented me with a sturdy plastic bag and said I had to spread the weight and check one bag in.

All my books and non-essentials (clothes) went in that bag. This left my laptop, Tim Tam’s and essentials in the carry on.  Then back into the check-in queue for a third time.  There was a delay because some Dr kind of person from Medecins Sans Frontieres had a medical box with dry ice and they had to be sure about it.  By then I was thinking, “Damn their good work, just get out of my way!”

I asked every so sweetly, jovially and manipulatively if I could have two carry on bags (now that one was 4kg and the other 7.8kg). The check-in person politely said “No”.  So now I have luggage to wait for.  In a flimsy plastic bag!!  I am expecting when I get to LAX for there to be a stream of jock’s, socks jeans and books come streaming around on the luggage carousel!

To make it worse, when I went through customs the second time, the different security guard had no interest in weighing my bag!!  Arrrggh!!  If only I got him first. If only you could choose your own security guard!

A bit of healthy perspective though. I am now sitting in the Qantas lounge, checking email, writing my blog and planning my direct flight to LAX and then Portland.  It seems that my problems are high quality problems.

Such is the life of a lazy traveller!!

How Do You Deal With It?

On the recent holiday to Bali, I came face to face with nature. It was an interesting and unexpected encounter. Luckily we got some of it on video. Click the image below to watch it.
Monkey
It is not often you have a monkey on your back! The guide had mentioned if a monkey did interact with you to remain calm. I did get a bit of a fright. I had no idea what it was going to do. I didn’t know how the situation would end, I didn’t know what the monkey wanted and I certainly was not prepared for the second monkey (who seemed to want to take my shirt off!)
Life is a bit like that too. Things happen without prior warning and you have to deal with them as best and as quickly as you can. You can find yourself in a situation you didn’t plan on and like the monkey, you need to remain calm and deal with it.
So how do deal with these situations?

Why Do You Do It?

Book Cover

Today I am enjoying the Queen’s Birthday Holiday. It always makes me laugh that the UK don’t get a holiday for her birthday but we in the colonies do!
What better way to start the day than staying in bed reading a book. One of my favourite authors is Stephen King. Not because I am a horror fan (far from it) I just love the way he writes.

His short stories are some of my favourites. Many don’t realise he wrote (among others) The Green Mile, The Mist, Running Man, Stand By Me and Hearts in Atlantis.

In the introduction to Just After Sunset (my current read), he mentions that he

writes not for the money, not for the fame and not for himself. He writes for those who will read his stories. He writes to create a better experience for them. He is also serious about his writing. In his non-fiction book “On Writing” he says if you are serious about writing you need to read

4 hours a day and write 4 hours a day.

So why do you do what you do? Is it for the money, to provide for those you love, to master the art of it, is it a game or is it to improve the lives of your end customer? How much effort do you spend at your skill? Why Do You Do It?

P.S. This is the blatant promotion piece. I have just had a new demo reel created. You can see it here. To celebrate, as well as it being the end of financial year, any bookings made with deposits paid before 30 June 2011 will get over $300 worth of books, CD’s and eCourse’s PER ATTENDEE. Are You Crazy?

Toe nailAre You Crazy?

Wifey and I had a great week in Bali. On the last day, we had time to fill in between checkout and our midnight flight. So we went for massages, manicures and pedicures. As they were pedicuring my toes I asked, “Can I have purple toenails?”

The young girls just laughed at me. Then they realised I was genuine. So we went through the colours until I got the purple I was after.
As she was painting she jokingly asked, “Do you want a flower?”
Naturally I said, “Yes please!”
Again she laughed but did it. The photo is the finished result.

Their reaction was one of “are you crazy?”

Many times I have done things and normal, sane, professional people have asked “are you crazy?”

Sure I could have done the normal thing and not had my toes painted. But I would never have seen an artist at work creating flowers with nail polish.
Sure I could have stayed in Melbourne and not taken a job in Wahgunyah 3 hrs from Melbourne but I would never had the exposure to head office that I had working on a small account rather than a large one
Sure I could have not competed in Raw (the Stand Up Comedian competition) but I would not have been able to get the experience in honing my funny bone or know how to hit other peoples.

My biggest fear is that my life will be “beige”. Being crazy or doing crazy things gives me experiences that most don’t have, understanding many search for, perspective few ever see and joy many seek.  So when people ask me “Are you crazy?” I reply, “Yes, and thanks for the compliment.”

What about you?  Are you Crazy? Try it, it does wonders for you.

What Inspires You?

They say life is short. Billy Connolly pointed out it is the longest thing you ever do!
For many people, one week is the same as the next…is the same as the next…is the same as the next.
What inspires you to get up each day and get on with your life? Is it your pay cheque? The idea of living a better life? Is it contribution to others? Is it providing for your loved ones?

If you don’t have an inspiration, how can you expect to face the day energised and ready to rock?

So what inspires you?

Who Are You Selling To?

So many sales people run around trying to get new clients, they forget about their existing ones. One company I was talking to last week is in severe financial crisis. They are so focussed on getting new customers to get them out of debt that they forgot about

their existing ones.

It is a commonly accepted figure is that it is 5 times easier to sell to existing customers than get a new one. Soooo many people know this, but most RARELY act on it. So today, what additional or repeat product or service can you sell to your existing client base?

Who are you selling to?

It has often been said that you will get what you want once you want what you’ve got.

The book Affluenza talks about how many people spend money they don’t have buying things they don’t need to impress people they don’t like.

How Will You Celebrate

It’s my birthday! On Tuesday I turn 43 years old. Happy birthday to me!

I must confess the each year just keeps getting better. Sure there are things I would like to be different in my life but on the whole I have a blessed life.

It was Socrates who said, “A life unexamined is a life half lived.” So for my birthday, I would like you to celebrate by examining your life. To make it easier, I have created a 2 page tool I call the “Birthday Bash”. It allows you to consider the last 12 months and the next 12 months.  What lessons have you learned from the last year and what can you do different for the next year.

I am celebrating my birthday by completing the Birthday Bash and having the day off, how will you celebrate?

PS
Make sure you have your birthday off too! Put your leave form in today to make sure it happens. No one should have to work on their birthday!

Do You Re-Create?

Conference

Wow! What a couple of months!

It feels like I have gone from conference to conference, coaching to coaching, client to client.
I was even working several weekends.

While I had a lot of

fun doing this, I was also quite exhausted. Consequently I have done nothing for the last three days. Well maybe a bit of reading and a comedy festival show and a BBQ christening but nothing that required my normal work mode.

It is always important to have time for Rest and Recreation (Re-Creation). Think of it as giving your life equipment a grease and oil change. Time off running the equipment to ensure its long term operation.

So do you Re-Create?

PS This photo is of the ROSA Conference held out in the middle of the bush with NO mobile phone coverage or Internet – that was scary. Others commented it was 1/2 star accommodation. While the bunks in the dorm were comfy, it was also 5 star fun with campfire singing, whitewater rafting, trout fishing and astronomy (Saturn’s rings on show!)

Who Wins a Price War?

Who Wins a Price War?
I was running an MC Mastery workshop on

Saturday and there were questions about pricing. In the industry some are charging 10 to 30% of what others charge.

I learnt early in the game “No One Wins a Price War”.

Look at recent price fights with the supermarkets. Milk prices are down, bread prices down and beer prices were almost down. Supermarkets have long had “loss leaders” – products at or below cost to get customers in the store. They then make up the margin on other products. Customers get the illusion of a bargain but suppliers get taken advantage of! Dairy farmers make less profit per litre on milk than supermarkets do yet the farmers do all the hard work (I grew up on a dairy farm and know the large amount of work for the small amount of money).

CUB chose not to participate in a beer war but not selling product to the two major supermarkets. They also sent team members to buy back valuable brands of wine that were being sold below wholesale. Don’t mess with CUB!

What about your prices? Once you have to start defending your prices, you are lost. Put your efforts into showing your value and how much it is worth and you stay out of a price war. Show your prospect what they get for their money. What intangibles as well as tangible products and services.

This is the same for employees. Don’t ask for a pay rise because you haven’t had one for over 12 months. Justify your pay increase or bonus request by showing how much value you have brought the business. Money you have saved, sales you have contributed to, and value you have brought to the business.

No one wins a price war, so don’t even think about it. Focus solely on the value you are providing and make it a logical win-win decision.

What is the Value?

Whether you are selling, motivating, leading, parenting, exercising, marketing or just making things happen, you HAVE to know, what is the value.  What is the value of what you are trying to achieve for you, your team, your family, your friends, whoever is on your side.

Why would someone want to buy your product or service? What problem will it solve for them or what benefit will it give them?
Why would your team member want to exhibit the behaviour you want? What do they get for it or what do they avoid?

Sales and motivation is all about value.  Show them the value and you can’t help but be a success.

So what is the Value?

Does It Match The Plan?

Happy Tuesday!

You may be thinking “But I usually get this on a Monday, what’s happening?”
My commitment is to send the Get More Goer every Monday (except when I forget and then it is a Tuesday). But today I didn’t forget, I chose to send it Tuesday. For many states in Australia, this Monday was a public holiday. I thought it more relevant and timely if you got this on the Tuesday and not the Monday.

This is what a Plan gives us. It gives us the facts we need to vary from the plan. We can evaluate what is the more important thing to do, what is on the plan or the other item that has arisen. This is why planning your week and your day is so important. It actually helps you be more flexible and know the cost of your flexibility.

John Lennon famously said, “Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.”
