Go to the Edge!

Greetings!

If you follow me on Twitter or have seen my FaceBook page recently you will know that I am doing my first stand up comedy show on Saturday.

I don’t mind confessing that I am a little scared! I like to think I am a little funny and that I keep people amused at parties but being on stage in the spot light is a little different.

You may also know that I am a professional speaker so being in front of people is not a new experience for me. But there is a huge difference between cracking a few jokes during a one hour session and making people laugh constantly for 5 minutes.

5 minutes!! It is not long but it can seem like a life time. I had a routine written and I was pretty confident (to be honest I was a bit to confident!) and then I performed it in front of ten friends at

a workshop we had yesterday. Ouch!! Wasn’t that good. So I have spent a lot of yesterday and today rewriting my 5 minutes of comedy.

I have thought about doing this for ages. There is no reason for me to do this other than to go to the edge and peer over. I don’t want to fail. I want to be funny! In fact, to be completely honest, I want to get to the next round. For years I have avoided this but I can’t do it any more.

What about you?

What have you always wanted to do but have been avoiding? Where is your edge?
Do you have times where you live on the edge or can you only see the edge from where you are?
“It’s somewhere over there in the distance.”

Spending time on the edge is scary, but fulfilling. My confidence and self belief are growing. My willingness to do the impossible or at least the unthinkable is growing. In fact the more time I spend on the edge, the more it moves further from me.

Come to the edge with me. Let’s see what we can do!

Christmas is for giving!

This is our tree. Loaded with presents for our loved ones. In fact, our tree is a little depleted of presents because we had a party on the weekend and people took theirs for the big day.

As I was thinking about Christmas (one of my favourite times of the year), I considered what I have been told as a kid, that Christmas is for giving. It was only when I wrote that sentence down that I noticed the truth of it.

“Christmas is for giving” or possibly “Christmas is forgiving”.

What a cool thing!! Christmas is forgiving. What a gift to give yourself and others this year!! Forgiveness!

Who are some of the people and institutions you could give the gift of forgiveness?
Yourself – Is there anything you blame yourself for that you could now let go of?
Your family – Do you still hold any grudges for things that your family members said, did, didn’t say or didn’t do?
Your friends – Do you have any friends you need to forgive?
Institutions – Are there any companies (banks, post offices, utility supplier, ISP’s, online services etc) who have crapped you off this year that you need to forgive?

You know the best thing about forgiveness? You are the one that benefits the most. By forgiving others you get freedom from baggage that you have been carrying around all this time. You get to lighten you load and focus on being the real you, not someone driven crazy by the weird and wonderful people in your life.

Give it a try!! You may be surprised at the results and you don’t even have to use gift wrapping!!

Enjoy!

Happy Anniversary

It is a month of anniversaries!

Today my lovely wife, Sam (see the picture for her loveliness), and I celebrate our first wedding anniversary. That 12 months has gone soooo fast yet also it has taken ages. During that time we have had many experiences and achieved some great things.

Later this month her parents celebrate 40 years of marriage!! Crikey!! That is something to aim for.

To celebrate our first wedding anniversary, we went out to a lovely little Mexican restaurant, had some yummy food and considered the last 12 months. What were the highlights, what were the key learnings and what were our favourite moments. We then looked at the 12 months ahead. What sort of things did we want to achieve, where did we see ourselves in 12 months, how would life be for us. Granted it wasn’t totally “romantic” but it was fun creating plans and ideas together.

When did you last do a review? May be it is time for one now.

Luckily I have an out line for you – sort of, here’s one we prepared earlier!! Visit my website and on the resources pages you will see the regular results review. Download this and follow the instructions. You will be surprised at how much you have achieved and what you are capable of.

Consider it my anniversary gift to you!

Enjoy!

Accidentally Famous

You never know who reads your site, blog, twitter, facebook or whatever else you do.

While “Famous”, as referred to in the title, is a bit of a stretch I was pleased to find out that my ex-Poodle was referred to on an English TV series. He was a chocolate toy poodle and his name was Burma. So full of energy and life but unfortunately he burst a disc in his back and I had to put him down – a very difficult and heart wrenching decision.

Thanks to the internet, he will live forever (well at least until he gets archived!!)

Stephen Fry is the host of a BBC program called Quite Interesting where they would chat about obscure facts and look for funny questions to challenging questions. After talking about the country Burma and getting ready to go to the ad break, Stephen looked to camera and said:

“Actually, interestingly, while double-checking this information on etiquette and Burma on the Internet, we came up with the extraordinary information that it’s considered polite to express joy by eating snow and to send unwanted guests away by biting their leg, and normal behaviour to wipe your mouth on the sofa. This is actually true, the researchers were writing this down with great excitement about Burma, only to discover in the end that Burma turned out to be the name of a poodle belonging to the author of the website. ”

I found the quote on the TV guide here http://tinyurl.com/BurmaBpy

The point is, yes there is a point, you never know who will see what you write and where it will be. That page of my old website is long gone, it went with Burma, but it has had an impact!

What sort of impact will you have?

Enjoy

Are you sure it’s not funny?

Life is pretty serious. I mean, just look at the people on public transport, people walking down the street, strolling through the supermarket, huddled around the stock market numbers, watching over kiddies, driving cars…… How serious is everyone!!

I don’t get it.

People seem to have so much more fun when they laugh, or even just a smile. Wouldn’t you think they would want to do it more? Wouldn’t you think that every situation has to have at least some fun part to it, some element that could at least bring on a smile? Even a boring board room meeting?

I know what I did. I focussed on having a smile as my default expression. Not an easy thing to do but with practice it works. So when I walk down the street, go on a train, ride my motorbike, talk with strangers, I smile. It makes me feel good and others join in.

Wanna join me to? Today, put a smile on your dial. I DARE YOU!!!

Enjoy!
