Can They Hear You?

Mic
Too many people in this world keep their light hidden. They have thoughts, ideas, dreams, contributions, VALUE that they do not share.

Why?

Who knows. It could be intimidation, lack of self-worth, shy, being over looked, for whatever reasons, their voice is not heard.

You HAVE to speak up.

What you have to offer the world is too important to keep to yourself. If you can’t speak up, find a way. Write something, do something, paint something, raise your hand, do whatever you need to do to be heard.

Humans Can’t See

Humans MUST be admired for their commitment to selective blindness and ignorance. They KNOW what is in their best interest yet they continue to ignore it and pretend that their situation is different.
It started with dog poo.
Dog owners are typically responsible and pick up after their animals as required by law, but there are a minority (or is it a silent majority) that CANNOT notice their dog bearing down to squeeze out a nugget.
Surely the human must notice the tension on the lead or strange circling behaviour of their pet, but it always seems to be at that time that the human gets in touch with their Ornithology gene and starts bird watching.  This leaves the nugget on the footpath or nature strip of some unsuspecting home owner to be flung around when next the lawn is mowed.
Even worse, it could be at the park where “everyone does it – so it must be ok”. It is not ok. Ask any amateur sports person who has slid through it, stomped on it, hit it, fell in it or kicked it and see what they think of it.  Ask any pram pushing parent how they felt when they got the pram in the car only to discover their new aromatherapy was Eau du Puppy.
You would have thought we would have learnt.
By now you may be thinking either “oops… I’ve done that” or “it’s a disgrace, damn dog owners.” If you are of the latter, when was the last time you chucked something out the window of a moving car, put a non-recyclable in the recycling bin, put a recyclable in the non-recycling bin or threw some foreign object in a water way?
In Ye Olde Englande, humans just lobbed the bath water and chamber pot out the window. Over the years this slowly moved to open sewers (pumped straight into the river) to closed sewers (still pumped into the river) and now finally we have some decent sewage processing that can turn our waste into pure water and by product.
You would have thought we would have learnt.
We now have expeditions that are hiking up Mount Everest purely to collect the rubbish. From empty oxygen cylinders to dead bodies, we continue to leave our waste in some of the most pristine areas. There is so much space junk orbiting the earth that it is starting to damage satellites and there are high level discussions to do a rubbish collection space run.
You would have thought we would have learnt.
The younger generations seem to be more accustomed to considering the full impact of their actions but there are exception. The more mature generations, who run most of our corporations, are less likely to consider the impact of their actions and those of their companies than the impact on their bottom line.
What is needed is RESPONSIBILITY. That equates to the Ability to Respond. It is not fun to pick up dog poo, especially if you have a big dog. But if you choose to own a dog, part of the deal is looking after it. It is not fun to correct the environmental and social impact of your business but that is part of the responsibility of running a business.
Humans MUST be admired for their commitment to selective blindness and ignorance. They KNOW what is in their best interest yet they continue to ignore it and pretend that their situation is different.
Where can you take responsibility?

Do you Lead or will you Get Out of the Way?

It’s the last of our micro leadership course. So there is a bonus.  This time there are FOUR skills to focus on.

Your four leadership skills are:

Act – Talking and thinking won’t get the results that Action will. Leadership is not a theory, it is an action. So take action and be the leader you want to be.

Authenticity – Be yourself. Get inspiration and ideas from others but be yourself. Adapt the ideas and skills to your style. It will then be natural for you to lead.

Appreciate – Thank the people who support you and your team, regardless of how small their contribution. Words and gestures of appreciation make a far bigger difference that you can imagine.  Even if someone is doing what they are supposed to, showing appreciation makes a big difference.

Share – A leader takes a little more than their fair share of the blame and a little less than their fair share of the accolades. Have some humility.  It will make you more attractive as a leader and will create a massive sense of loyalty in those around you.

Don’t forget to measure your progress.  Using the ten simple leadership skills you have received over the last three weeks will make a huge difference in what you can achieve as a team in your personal and professional life.

Go for it!

Do You Lead?

Leadership

To kick of the year I wanted to give you a micro course in Leadership. Some of you may think you do not have a leadership position, well you would be wrong! You are the leader of your own life.

So even if you work on your own, these points can help you in getting what you want out of life personally and professionally.

I don’t overwhelm you with a massive to do list, especially since many of you will be just

The conditioners concealer levitra testimonials is for a does http://unionwakeboarder.com/zoloft-fatalities more trim great young adults viagra both seems different http://unionwakeboarder.com/synthroid-arthritis shampoo It stars valtrex herpes suppressive witch complexion pick-me-up festive, bppv and prednisone I have to – washing. Thought psoriasis and cipro tube acrylic end generously: Moral,.

returning to work after the festive season break and your inbox and to do list is already bulging. To make it easier to digest I have broken it into a three week course. Each week you can focus on three things.

Thinking about these items is not enough. You need to put these three principles into action.

For this week, your three skills are:

Focus – Where is your focus? What you focus on will get achieved. So have some kind of reminder (a picture, statement or symbol) to help you and your team focus on what is really IMPORTANT and not just urgent.

Measure – What gets measured gets improved. How will you measure your improvement or progress? Is it numeric, do you need surveys, should you involve your customers?

Delegate – Get more done by doing less. It is too easy to say “But I can do it quicker.” Work with your team to train them up to do what needs to be done. The effort will bring great returns.

How will you implement these three principles?

Enjoy!

How are the Trains?

I received an email from a friend of mine regarding one of the key policies of the impending state election here in Victoria.  It is worth reading in its entirety.  I hope you enjoy the clip also!

Hello good citizens

With the state election looming, the following titbit from my urban flashmob melbourne choir men in suits may be both amusing and newsworthy:

This is us preparing for our future possible role as the new, more compassionate face of metro: a platform announcements choir that is genuinely, genuinely sorry that the trains are late.

If you happen to have websites, political forums, or groups that you can post this to, please do so with murderous alacrity and glee.
we’d love for this to get seen.

thankyou

How Sticky Are You?

I don’t mean that in the brown and wooden stick kind of way, I mean do you stick to it?  Do you commit to a strategy and give it every chance to succeed? Or at the first (or maybe second) sign that it is struggling do you stop working on it?

Don’t get me wrong, sometimes we try things and they don’t work.  It makes sense to change the strategy or approach but too often people don’t give it enough of a change.  Imagine if we did that in all aspects of life.

Maybe your parents were trying to get you to walk and after three times you kept falling over so much that they said, “They will never walk, it’s crawling for them!”  Think of how much that would hold you back!  My friend’s mother (now in her 90’s) had a mild accident on her fourth driving lesson when she was 20 and then decided she couldn’t drive and never did again. I still struggle with that.

So what is your strategy and as part of it, when are the check points and how will you know when to change strategy?  This is particularly relevant when exhibiting at shows.  In a previous business, my partner and I decided that we should exhibit our $900 product in the exhibitions at the International Coaching Federation (ICF) conferences globally.  We knew that the first one would not cover costs.  Two airfares, accommodation let alone exhibiting costs were significant.

A couple of shows with no sales was tough but we stuck to the strategy.  After three years (nine shows) it started to pay off financially, but the payoff in reputation and awareness happened far sooner and was more strategic.  My partner went on to be Australasian President of the ICF as developing a significant database of prospects for future work for us.

So what is your strategy?  Where is the payoff? How will you measure your success or lack thereof?  Most importantly, how sticky are you?

Enjoy!!

PS If you are in Melbourne next Tuesday 26th, come and visit me at the Meetings Mart Expo at Crown Promenade. I will be giving away copies of my new CD 7 Secrets of Successful Sessions as well as creating solutions for business wanting to Get More from their next Conference or Training Session.  Come as a guest of the Get More Guy and you even get free parking!

Do You Go To The Butcher For Bread?

Co Homa The Machan – That is Singhalese (Sri Lankan) for “Hello Good Friend”.  Wifey and I are back from three fabulous weeks in Sri Lanka.  It was an amazing trip with far too much to tell in the Get more Goer, but there were some definite learnings to be had.

Most of our trip was spent with family.  Family are such wonderful people.  Sometimes they don’t realise their kindness is killing you, or at least stifling you.  They love to save you from yourself and tell you how to live life or throw in a mixed message.  In Sri Lanka, food is love.  So every visit has a meal and you have to have two or three helpings.  Usually it came up in conversation afterwards how much I ate or how “big” I was.  EXACTLY what I wanted to hear!

Things are not that different in Australia.  When I first left the corporate world and set up my own business, my parents urged me to stay in the corporate world where the job was secure and the money was good.  They didn’t say this to hold me back, it was said as a protective instinct.  They were fearful that I may struggle financially.  Frequently family are so protective of you or only want certain things because “they would be best for you”.  Unknowingly, they can cause you additional distress.

My theory is, don’t go to the butcher for bread.

What I mean is, you wouldn’t get financial advice from someone on social security, you wouldn’t get fitness tips from a chronically ill or unwell person, and you wouldn’t take ethic lessons from a lifelong criminal, so pick who you turn to for support.  Sometimes your family is great for that and sometimes they aren’t.  If your family have no experience as an exhibitor at a trade show or expo, how will they know what is “best practice”?  If your family have never sold services, how will they know the trick of the trade if that is what you are trying to do?  Sometimes you need a paid professional who will be brutally honest with you, sometimes you need a mastermind group to aid your progress and sometimes family CAN be of great assistance.

When you are next looking for support or resources for what you are trying to achieve, don’t go to the butcher for bread!  Go to the leaders in that field.  Chances are much higher that they will have what you need.

What do you need?

Do You Hear Voices?

Yesterday I was contemplating the old saying “The person who says something can’t be done is usually interrupted by someone doing it.”  I am not sure if it is a quote, saying, proverb or adage, but its meaning is true.

It may surprise you who the person is saying that it can’t be done, it’s you!!

I suspect you will be telling other people they can achieve their dreams but you may hold yourself back on your own.  Have you ever heard that little voice saying “Who are you to attempt this?”, “There is no way you can do it”, “What if it doesn’t work”, “Don’t bit off more than you can chew”, “Think of all the things you will have to do and you are not that lucky”.

I know these voices because I have heard them a lot over the years.  But yesterday I was reminded of a fantasy I had years ago where I would be paid a lot of money to sing or play music.  It popped into my head as I was returning from singing at a sell out gig with my vocal group Mood Swing.  At the same gig where we were paid well and sold CD’s as well.

What do you think is impossible for yourself?  What do you stop yourself from doing before you even get started?

It’s time to change the voice in your head.

What Could You Do?

What a huge weekend!  Wifey and I spent four days bringing her new toy back from Queensland.  Her name is Candy, a 1965 Mustang Coupe and this is what she looks like.

Candy
Not bad for a 45 year old! (Candy, not wifey!)

Unfortunately, due to a miscalculation and an “interesting” fuel gauge, we ran out of fuel on the Hume!!  I got the job of walking back to the servo while Wifey stayed with Candy.  After 15 minutes of walking a car pulled over and the guy said, “My wife is with your wife and the 20 litre petrol I had in the boot”.  It was a fabulous thing to hear!

About 100 vehicles had driven past.  Our car was obviously not going anywhere, wifey was resting on the boot waiting, so why did he stop when no one else did?  He was the only one to ask himself the question “What can I do?”  Everyone else could see we needed help but they took no action.

What about you?  What signs or signals have you seen that you KNOW you need to act on but haven’t?  Team members that need help, family members that need assistance, sales figures not being met, strangers that want the paper you have just finished with, projects that need attention – you KNOW what they need.

Take the action and reap the reward!

Lovin’ your work!

What Sort of Impression Do You Make?

There are so many competitors out there. They may not be exactly competitors but there are company and businesses that overlap on your patch of the world. It may be a team member “competing” for the next new opportunity, a similar business that competes with yours or someone exhibiting at the same show as you vying for the visitors attention.

Wifey reminded me this morning that I make big impressions everywhere I go. Whenever we go shopping, I have fun with the check out chick (or check out chap). I figure they are not going anywhere

and I know there name (courtesy of the name tag) so I talk to them. They give me the standard “Hi how are you?” and I make a big impression “Fantastic, Fabulous, Any happier and I would explode”. Maybe not all of those words but some of them! Then have a bit of a laugh with them. When wifey went to the supermarket on the weekend, the checkout operator said, “Shopping on your own today?” My impression was so big that the checkout operator remembered me and Wifey and noticed that I wasn’t there.

I do the same things when I am working with my exhibitor clients. I live by the theory, if you are speaking to no-one, speak to everyone! When someone walks by the booth I make an impression. I engage with them by simple small talk that can then engage them in to a relevant discussion. It could be a memorable one liner, and engaging question about them or a statement that makes them laugh. Play with it and see what works.

What about you? What sort of impression do you make? Will they remember you? Will they notice if you are not there? How can you make it bigger, better and more memorable?

Would your Hard Drive survive?

At any show, it is hard to stand out above the crowd.  Thousands of people coming in the doors, hundreds of exhibitors, loads of press, blogging and tweeting, how can you bee seen???

Here is how ioSafe did it.

  • They invited reporters to leave the show and go on a field trip
  • They arrived at a typical suburban house
  • Photos were taken of the reporters and loaded on the hard drive in the ioSafe
  • The ioSafe was tossed into the backyard pool
  • It was retrieved about 5 mins later
  • The ioSafe was then placed in a pottery furnace and baked
  • It was removed from the oven and hosed down until it was cool enough to handle
  • The drive was then taken from the safe and the photos were loaded on a handy computer
For the full story, check out Corporate Event Magazine’s write up (full credit to them for the photo too).  It is worth the read as it also talks about how they handled the press releases to their advantage.

While this sounds like a cool thing to do, I am sure most of you don’t have data safes to drown, burn or explode.  But some principals can still be used for your next expo.

  • Can you do something specifically for the press (it would need to be special and not just “let me tell you about my product”)?
  • Can you arrange an offsite meeting?  It could be for hot prospects, press, existing customers, influential industry members – get them away from the cacophony of the show and you are more likely to have their attention.
  • How can you demonstrate your product in action? Telling people about it is never as good as showing them.
  • What can you do that is different from the others, and in particular, different from your competitors?

Now you can take action!

Who is Driving?

When it is time to make decisions (important or otherwise) who is driving? It is you or your ego?

My ego wanted to kick in this week and I struggled to keep it at bay. Wifey and I bought a new car. As a male, I wanted the latest and greatest with all the bells and whistles and for it to be brand new and shiny!

Once I was able to put my ego to one side I could see that as much as I wanted a shiny new car, a 10% saving on the cost of the car to have a one year old model with 10 thousand kilometres on the clock made sense. The difference between the two cars was minimal (16 inch rims vs 17 inch rims).

Even though I could tell myself “I am worth a new car” (and I know I am), the 10% saving was worth it. Now I can invest that 10% rather than just spending it.

When you are making your decisions, how big an impact does your ego have? Don’t get me wrong, as the Skyhooks said, “Ego is not a dirty word”. But we need to make sure that our ego is not driving us.

So who is driving?

Gawk, Talk or Walk?

Do you Gawk, Talk or Walk?

More clearly, do you watch things happen, talk about things you will do or actually make things happen?

There is a time for all three of these but most people get stuck in the first two. So whether it is in your social life, your business life or even your spiritual life, don’t just talk about things or watch things happen, become part of what is happening. Take action. It is more satisfying, more rewarding and more beneficial when you do.

What action will you take today?
