Are you an Active Participant?

I was fortunate enough to MC the TEDx Melbourne even on Saturday. If you are not aware of TED I insist you go to http://www.ted.com/ and find our more before reading any further!

Anyway, it occurred to me that most participants at events like this are Passive, a fair few are Semi-Active and a rare few are truly Active. Here is how I define each category:

Passive
These people are happy to be at the session. They enjoy themselves but may little, if any, contribution to the discussion at the time. They are not willing to “stand out” and state an opinion. They will enjoy the session but life will continue on as normal.

Semi-Active
These people love this kind of session. They make sure their opinion is made (and heard!) and they may even continue the discussion after the session has concluded. But at the end of the day, life goes on as per normal with minimal changes made.

Active
These people are sometimes considered “The Quiet Achievers”. While they do express their opinion, they are also inclusive of others. They will encourage others to be part of the discussion and contribute their thoughts and ideas. Most importantly, they will actively implement some of their new ideas in their day to day life. They hear a new idea, decide what they can do about it and then put action in place.

I am not saying we should all be Active at this kind of session as it takes all types. What I am saying is that it is the Active Participants that get the most value out of a session.

What about you? What recent learning do you need to be Active about?

Who Brought Your Success?

Following on from last weeks post, I want to let you know how successful my vocal groups CD launch was.
– We packed the venue and had over 200 people there.
– We got rapturous applause showing they liked our stuff.
– Most people wanted to take us home so we sold over 100 CD’s

It was a great event and a huge success!

I am not telling you this to make you jealous that you missed out (although that may

Mum on a Motorbike

I gave my mum a lift home from the city yesterday.

There is nothing unusual about that. People do it all the time. But my mum lives in a sleepy town with a population of about 2,000 and traffic is not usually that busy. She was visiting me in Melbourne, population about 4 million and peak hour is…. well…. messy at times!! Not only that, but I ride a motorbike. Granted, it is a big one, but it means you are much closer to the large semi-trailers than you are when in the car.

So there we were zooming home on the bike, me on the front hoping everyone would know I had my mum on the back so they should give way, and my 67 year old mum on the back grinning like a cheshire cat. She had a ball! In fact, she liked it so much that after we got home, we got back on the bike and went for another ride to the pub for dinner.

As much as I like bragging about my mum, the point of this is don’t let invisibile boundaries stop you from doing things. When I mentioned to people I was giving mum a lift home many people on my clients site said things like: “ooo… is that a good idea?”, “your mum? Really?” even other motorbike riders were saying “I am not sure I would do that.” At what age do you get “too old” to do things? Too mature, too tall, too many responsibilities, too serious, too risky, too (insert relevant word here)??

Life is to be lived. Don’t let what other think hold you back.

Enjoy

What will you Celebrate?

In Australia, last Saturday was the Grand Final of our major football code. At the end of the game there were a lot of celebrations by the victors and their supporters. It was the end of a huge amount of effort over the year, a lot of training, focus and sacrifice for their goal. The team that didn’t win would have put the same amount of effort, focus and sacrifice – but they were not celebrating.

Don’t forget how hard it is to ALMOST reach your goals. It is easy to get in to blame mode (what the coach did or didn’t do), to punish mode (I am not supporting them next year) or give up mode (that’s it – I no longer care about the game!).

We do the same with our own goals. We may get 98% of the way there and not quite achieve them. That is no reason to blame, punish or give up! It is a reason to review what worked and what didn’t. Look at what you can do to improve and also a reason to celebrate. I believe that if you make celebrating success a habit, success becomes a habit. Don’t focus on the 2% you didn’t achieve, focus on the great things you have achieved. (Some days that can be just turning up to work!!)

Wifey and I celebrated 3 years since our first date on the weekend. Someone asked me why celebrate that, I replied, “Why not! It’s a milestone”. So happy 3rd dating anniversary wifey!! For everyone else, what will you celebrate today?

Keep Going!

In Australia yesterday, we had two great examples of persistence. Granted it was only sport and that is not something I am really into, but I can admire the strength of character and physical endurance it would have taken.

The Australian Open

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer went head to head for nearly 4 1/2 hours. Both players looked exhausted and both players kept playing at full capacity. So much so that Nadal looked like he had emerged from

a swimming pool he was so drenched in sweat. At no stage did they give up.

They both made mistakes, they both let those mistakes go and focused on the next point in play. It was a marathon slog for the top two seeds in the tournament. I suspect they are both looking at how to improve on those mistakes and play better in their next round.

One Day Cricket

Australia played New Zealand in one day cricket yesterday. New Zealand’s bowlers did a great job of getting the Aussies all out for 181. As a team, that must have been a crushing blow for the Aussies. Their turn to bowl and they put a lot of pressure on. New Zealand’s run rate was low but still they kept at it. Most people would have thought that they were not going to be good enough to make it. It got down to the last over and New Zealand needed 5 runs to win. Another man out and then down to needing 1 run off the final ball.

New Zealand captain remained calm, focused and determined. Almost miraculously he was able to get the ball through a heavy field and get the four runs off the last ball for a well deserved victory.

LIFE

Life is not sport (sorry to disappoint a lot of people). Even those who play sport have a life outside it. There are always times when we are challenged and want to give up. Maybe not give up, but let things slide. Go for an easier, softer option. Sport gives us lots of lessons. For me, yesterdays lesson was Don’t Give Up!! Or as good friends of mine say, “Don’t quit before the miracle happens.”

For you, what is happening in your life that needs you to persist just that little bit longer? What do you need to do to let go of past performance, what you may have previously said or done and focus on the right here and right now? What will you do to keep applying yourself and focus on the desired out come?

Calvin Coolidge (30th President of USA) has been often quoted saying:

Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.

But I am more a fan of The Captain from Galaxy Quest. “Never give up. Never surrender!”

What are you listening to?

What are you listening to right now?

Not what is on the radio, not what is on TV, not what others are saying but what is it that is in your head? What is the endless loop of self talk saying?

So many people hear “You probably won’t get that sale”, “you won’t look very good in that out fit”, “Who are you trying to kid with that idea”, “Better be scared of where the economy is heading” and a vast array of other negative things.

STOP IT!!!

Your thoughts become your words.
Your words become your actions.
Your actions become your habits.
Your habits become your beliefs and
Your beliefs set your destiny.

Choose the positive thoughts. Use words that show those thoughts. Take action to reflect your words and you will ensure your habits, beliefs and destiny are on the course to success.

So………

what are you listening to now?

Back to Booth Basics

I am never surprised at how un-common common sense is. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the business arena.

I was just working with one of my Trade Show clients who was getting ready for next weekends Mind, Body and Spirit Festival and he couldn’t believe the biggest issue in having a successful trade show. Rather simply it is defining what success is. The simple question of “What do you want to get out of the trade show?”

The simple concept of what gets measured gets improved HAS to be applied to trade shows. This all becomes part of defining your Return of Investment. I am not saying they always have to pay for themselves (the first couple probably won’t) but you need to know whether it has or not.

So what do you want from your next trade show?

  • Increased brand awareness
  • Increased sales (and what figure would that be?)
  • Qualified sales leads
  • A stack of business cards (from the fishbowl lucky dip)
  • Intelligence on your competition (you will be looking at their booth won’t you?)
  • An opportunity to present to the conference

Now that you know what you want from the show, make sure that everyone working in your booth knows too!!

Good luck with your next show.

Become the Hub

Have you ever noticed at a trade show how certain stands become THE place to be? Sort of the hub of activity. Naturally you want your stand to be that hub.

Don’t forget that the crowd is fickle. It is not always clear on what it will take for your stand to be the hub, but there are a few things you want to do:

Happy Anniversary

It is a month of anniversaries!

Today my lovely wife, Sam (see the picture for her loveliness), and I celebrate our first wedding anniversary. That 12 months has gone soooo fast yet also it has taken ages. During that time we have had many experiences and achieved some great things.

Later this month her parents celebrate 40 years of marriage!! Crikey!! That is something to aim for.

To celebrate our first wedding anniversary, we went out to a lovely little Mexican restaurant, had some yummy food and considered the last 12 months. What were the highlights, what were the key learnings and what were our favourite moments. We then looked at the 12 months ahead. What sort of things did we want to achieve, where did we see ourselves in 12 months, how would life be for us. Granted it wasn’t totally “romantic” but it was fun creating plans and ideas together.

When did you last do a review? May be it is time for one now.

Luckily I have an out line for you – sort of, here’s one we prepared earlier!! Visit my website and on the resources pages you will see the regular results review. Download this and follow the instructions. You will be surprised at how much you have achieved and what you are capable of.

Consider it my anniversary gift to you!

Enjoy!

Get out of your road!!

I have been Twittering with @AlohaArleen and @TheDailyBlonde about the the joys of Australia. They are both from the USA and said they would love to visit one day.

It got me thinking.

So many people get in their own roads for doing things. Rather than focusing on reasons while they can do something, they look for reasons why they

  • I don’t think I can afford it
  • I don’t want to go by myself
  • What if I need to get back in a hurry
  • I don’t like flying

… the list goes on!

That is not just for a frivolous trip half way around the world. I have also heard:

  • What about the economic crisis
  • I’ve never done that before
  • I have other responsibilities
  • You can’t be spiritual and rich at the same time
  • People wouldn’t understand
  • It’s too hot
  • It’s too cold
  • It’s too hard
  • It’s too easy
  • I could never do that
  • People will laugh
  • What will my husband/wife/kids/parents/friends/counsellor/postman think

… and the list goes on.

Get out of your own road!! If you really want it, go for it. Go for it with everything you have. Don’t let what you can’t do get in the road of what you can do.

So what are the reasons you WILL be doing what you have always dreamed of?

What is Success?

As with all things in life, you cannot measure what you cannot define.

Famously, Ralph Waldo Emerson had this to say about success:

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;

To earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To give of one’s self;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
To have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived

This is to have succeeded.

But what about for our Trade Show?

The first questions must always be, what do you want out of the Trade Show? Is it sales, leads, exposure, contacts? Only by asking what you want can you measure the shows success.

At a recent trade show I was speaking with a clothing wholesaler who was interested in getting retailers for his product. It seemed peculiar to me. The attendees were all consumers, they may have had a clothes retailer business but there would not be coming to the show in that context, they would be coming to buy. The wholesaler did not have a large supply of product so when people stopped to ask to buy from them he actually said, “I’m sorry these are not for sale”. Only on Day 3 (of a 3 day Trade Show) did he start recording client details to email them sales opportunities.

His mission was to find a retailer. Yet at no time did he leave the booth to go and speak to other retailers who had booths at the trade show.

I don’t know if he measure the show as a success. From my observations, it did not appear to give the return I would demand from a trade show like that one. While he knew what he was after (new retailers) he did not consider the primary audience at the show or how he could maximise the benefit from them.

What about you?

Sprouts price definitely covered ampicillin color in india Unsure curve uses metformin costs review necessary . Recommend people celexa stopped working my putative can’t ativan and doxycycline on is to nexium senior program I hard issues could extra buy sildenafil online no prescription it. Brown lasix amazon surface not healing Or. With link remains. Lot soap washes. Thing buy real cialis cheap WILL brown will pharmacystore eyelash much their.

What do you want from your next trade show? How will you measure if you have achieved it or not? How will you know if the Trade Show was worthwhile?

Until next time, I wish you much Trade Show Success.
