What a Gift!

Today is my birthday. I am 46 years old!

Woo hooo!!  There was a time when that was the average male life expectancy. Nowadays, it is barely halfway.

I have so many things to be grateful for on this day. Too many to mention them all but there is one very special thing I must acknowledge.

My friends!

I am so blessed with some amazing people in my life. Of course my best friend Wifey! There is also my close circle of friends and then there are those in my bigger circle.

My friends all seem to be amazingly talented as well. In fact, let me share my birthday present with you. A couple of gorgeous gals I know took time out of their holiday to make this for me. It is one of the most beautiful gifts I have ever received.  What do you think of it?

It’s a Love Hate Relationship

This is Lester. I love him (not in the biblical sense!) and HATE him all in the same breath.

As you probably know from seeing any image of me, I am a Nutritional Over Achiever.

One of my mantras has always been “Happy Healthy Hundred.” I want to live to be a hundred years old but be happy and healthy when I get there. Being a nutritional overachiever will limit the possibility of that happening and while mantras are great, a mantra alone won’t get you there. While I am waiting for the Universe to provide, others are getting off their backside and making things happen.

So I finally bit the bullet and joined the Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre (it’s a fantastic facility so if you live in the area, check it out)

I love the idea of carrying less body fat. I love the idea of living a medication free life. I love the idea of bouncing around on stage inspiring people without puffing. I love the idea of taking my dog for a run (have you seen how fast toy poodles are?). I HATE the idea of dieting. I HATE the idea of exercising. I HATE the idea of hurting after a workout.

So here is what I am doing, I am focusing on what I love and not what I hate. I am engaging that quite rare sense of Delayed Gratification. I get it will take me a while to build my fitness levels back up and drop some of the body fat so I am focussing on the benefits of what that will give me rather than the short term pain I have to endure.

To get me there, Lester took me to task.

I could only hobble, not walk for three days! I was cursing him and he only laughed at me when I told him what I thought of him. So even though I make a lot of noise about it, I am still focussed on the long term payoff and not the short term pain.

I am embracing the concept of “It doesn’t hurt once the pain goes.”

While this applies to me with my current level of fitness and the rather cruel Lester, does this situation exist for you at all?

Maybe not with fitness but with a skill, an education level, your personal investments, your relationships or another are of your life? Where do you need to engage an expert who you can help you achieve the goals you want even though there may be some short term pain to get there?

Basically who do you need to Love and Hate? Go find them and make it happen.

Get On Board

I was fortunate enough to have a flight on the new Melbourne Star a couple of weeks ago.

Yes… it is called a flight. For some it is the flight of the Phoenix

Melbourne wheel has a troubled past and there are many who are quick to have a go at it again. It is a spectacular piece of engineering and while it may have its faults, don’t we all?

It will give you a unique perspective on Melbourne and is a bit of fun for the money. In speaking to a couple of random tourists in the area, they raved about it.

My approach is Get On Board.

It is similar to changes in business, changes in the family situation or changes in life.
You can fight the irreversible change, you can whinge and moan about how it will fail or you can embrace it and get on board. You never know what bonus or special surprise you may find.

For the company I was working with (we did it as part of the Sales Conference kickoff) we discovered you had a pretty good view of their head office. Guess where they will be taking their international guests from now on?

So for Melbourne Wheel and other changes thrust upon you, Get On Board.

PS Here are some of the photos you can get at Melbourne Star. Look how excited we were!

Are You On Focus?

Now days with emails, text messages, social media, guru’s popping off the internet left, right and centre, it can be hard to stay focussed on what counts.

I have just come back from 3 days attending and hosting the National Speakers Association of Australia conference. Nearly everyone I spoke to struggled with BSO’s.

Bright Shiny Objects

What about you and what you are working towards? It doesn’t matter if it is a personal or a professional goal, it is too easy to get distracted. So stay on FOCUS.
Stick some posters up of what you want to achieve. Have some accountability buddies to keep you on track. DO WHATEVER IT TAKES.

What Do I Do Now?

What Do I Do Now?

Many people will get back in the office today.
So after two, three or even four weeks off, what do you do now?

Yeah, you could spend hours trolling through the email, updating facebook or being completely overwhelmed by the to do list that is formulating in your head or on your note pad.

My humble suggestion? DON’T DO ANY WORK!

Too many people just get back into work as if they never left. This year becomes last year all over again.

Right now is the time to get two or three key learnings from last year and do just one or two things differently this year. We need to out grow our old self and blossom into AWESOME!

Sound good? Well here is my Regular Results Review. A simple two page document to give you these different ideas for 2014.

Before you start any work, grab a beverage and spend the hour or so working on this so your 2014 is loaded with great things.

Let me know if you need any help!

The Keys to Organisational Change

QuestionsThis week I had the pleasure of speaking on Jacki Mitchell’s radio show, Taking Care of Business.

Following the show, one of the listeners contacted me to ask the following question:

“What would you say are the skills and attitudes of a person who successfully introduces or influences change in a business or organisation?”

This was my response:

The most important thing here (in my opinion) is the right attitudes and not necessarily the skills. Cultural change and Organisation change are hard. Not because of the process but because you are battling the status quo. The main attributes you will be exercising are: Persistence, Resilience, Focus and a great sense of humour.

Persistence because you will need to keep at the process against all the ingrained resistance, the verbal support but lack of action and the indifference of senior management. Once you stick at it enough to get the momentum of the organisation, the journey switches from an uphill battle to a downhill cruise.

Resilience because you need to be able to keep getting back up everytime you fall down. In fact, you have to be able to get up more often. Keep getting up until you stop falling down.

Focus because you need to maintain the end picture and benefits of the change in mind. Keeping the long term benefits in sight while you suffer through the short term pain can be a challenge.

A sense of humour because it will make you life easier, your meetings more enjoyable and maintain your healthy sense of perspective on what you are doing. Plus smiling and laughing makes you fun to be around.

What do you think?

What Counts?

What Counts?

Money

on the material things. It is easy to get swept up in the loop of “must make money, must save money, must spend money.”

So what really counts?

The answer is different for everyone and sometimes the answer doesn’t present itself until much later in life.
I would strongly suggest to you that Money is only one way to measure what counts and there are a plethora of other ways.

Is it living in the country, running your own business, being creative, singing to an audience, having a family, creating a garden, being an active member of the community, being a person of faith, laughing with friends, learning new skills, reading, travelling, caring for others, your fitness, owning your own home, sharing your own home, sharing someone else’s home… there is no end to the list.

What is important is to decide for yourself what really counts and then pursue it regardless of what others say.

So Friends what really counts for you?

Is It Time?

Is It Time?

Coffee Time

I know some people that wear their annual leave entitlements like a badge of honour. They say things like, “I haven’t had a holiday in FOUR YEARS!!”

That’s insane!

Most people in Australia get four weeks of annual leave per year, so use it! You need it for Rest and Recreation. That’s Re-creation where you re create your energy, your ideas, your enthusiasm.

So Friends when did you last have some leave that was for you? Is it time?

Have You Broken The Habit?

Nun with BeerHave You Broken The Habit?

After a month of travelling, a couple of weeks of Man Flu (it was tragic) and a couple of weeks of pretty average excuses, I finally got my body back to my personal trainer.

I have to say, those first two sessions nearly killed me – but they hurt more later the next day.

It is a bit like the habits you have around the house and around your work place. They are so much easier to break than they are to make. Yet once you get into them, they seem to have a life of their own.

Be it making daily sales calls, writing daily blogs, keeping yourself OFF facebook, regular walks around the team to check how they are or simply putting the rubbish out when you need to, maintaining the focus on the your habit and it’s outcome is far easier than breaking the habit and starting again.

What habits are you willing to maintain today or have you Broken the Habit?

What’s Next?

What’s Next?

I have been in Sri Lanka a week performing MC duties and catching up with friends and family. It is a very different way of life here compared to what I am used to.

In many ways it is a much simpler way of life. It made me think about how much we seem to over-complicate our personal and business lives. So for this week, let your mantra be “Keep It Simple.”

In terms of your work and your life look at where are you now, where do you want to be and what action do you need to take to get there.
Quite simply, the best question is “what’s next?”

So when it comes to what you want out of business and life, What’s Next?

Based on last week’s Get More Goer, it seems like most of you are back at work this week. This email is probably just one of the many in your inbox – hopefully it is not buried! Some of you have been back on the job for a week or more so this is a quick reminder.

What’s The Risk?

On Sunday, the choir that I sing with, Mood Swing, performed at a memorial service for people who had died in the workplace. It is always a privilege to be part of this service and always disturbing to realise how fragile life is.

It made me think of the risks that people take in the work place. I have seen trades people working on a roof without safety barriers or safety harness. As a kid I recall jumping on and off moving tractors while feeding out hay. Plenty of people in offices have stood on swivel chairs with no support as they reach for something on top of the cabinet. Some of the risks we take can have severe consequences but take the risk anyway without thinking about it.

When it comes to financial risk, we are usually vigilant about minimising it. When it comes to our health and state of being, we seem to be willing to take significant risks.  Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying “NEVER take a risk”, I am saying “minimise and manage your risks”. A life without risks is restrictive and detrimental, but suffering from unnecessary risks is foolish.

So in what you are doing, what’s the risk? More importantly, how will you manage it and minimise it.

What Do Little Old Ladies Know?

Too often we dismiss the little old lady. They look frail, mind their own business and get on with life. But I believe we can learn a lot from them.

Today as I was leaving the NSAA Presidential Breakfast with my Vice President, we saw a large semi trailer seeming stuck in a car park at a shopping centre. It had hit the “too high” bar and the driver was busy on the phone trying to work out what to do. The little old lady knew what to do.

Several drivers impatiently drove their car on the wrong side of the road to get around the truck. Other pedestrians, shuffled around avoiding everyone, but the little old lady knew what to do!

She gracefully and with purpose went about her business walking toward the shops. As she crossed the road in front of the truck (whose driver was still

on the phone) she gave him a big wave to say “thanks for stopping for me.”

The Vice President and I cracked up laughing as it looked so comical. But that was when I realised that the little old lady was right. Regardless of whether the truck had stopped for her or not, she waved a thank you as if it did. She was courteous, graceful and focussed on what she needed to achieve for the day while realising that sometimes you will get support from unexpected places. Even if it merely a truck that has stopped where you need it to.

Too often the youth of today (and those who still wish they were the youth of today!) dismiss out of hand the lessons from those who have had more life experience. Today I got one from a little old lady just living her life.

One of my favourite little old ladies, Betty White, recently gave her 10 Tips for Living a Long and Happy Life on the Letterman show. If you want to see the video, click on her picture above. Here are some of my favourites from Betty:

  • Get at least 8 hours of beauty sleep, 9 if you are ugly
  • Avoid tweeting any photos of your private parts
  • Schedule a nightly appointment with Johnny Walker
  • Don’t waste your time watching TV
  • Never dwell on past mistakes
  • Try not to die

What can you learn from the little old ladies in your life?

Have You Got Spirit?

Have You Got Spirit?
faith
There is a trend sneaking up on us. Business is getting spiritual. It is not just the fringe business either.

  • ANZ Bank has been teaching Meditation as part of their Perform, Grow and Breakout sessions.
  • World Vision frequently has prayers before meetings (granted it is a Christian Organisation but not all who work there are Christian).
  • Aetna International (a large multinational insurance company) and HP also encourage staff to grow spiritually.

I am not saying put on a robe, shave your head and sit in the corner chanting. I would have you consider the following:

  • Why do you do what you do? Money, provide for others, build a business and then what? What is next? What gives it meaning?
  • What do you want from your life? What is your purpose? What keeps you getting out of bed day after day?
  • How do you give to the world rather than receive from it?

My experience is that those that bring a sense of spirit to the workplace are focussed on what really counts to them and better prepared to ride the ups and downs of life.

So Have You Got Spirit?
