Personal Politics

Well it’s over. The best news is that we don’t have to put up with rubbish TV adverts, biased reporting and loads of junk mail.

I know some people get fired up over politics but I’m not one of them. The reality is that Australia is in a brilliant position geographically, economically, ideologically and socially.
Don’t get me wrong, we have our problems and issues but they are “first world problems.”

The issue with politics is that they are like a person’s values. They identify who you are but they are not allocated by what you say but by what you do.

So Dear-Reader what are you doing to make your life, your workplace and your country a better place? What action are you taking?

Got Leverage?

Leveraged Property Archimedes (the mathematical legend) said something to the effect of, “Give me a lever long enough …and I shall move the world.”

This principle remains valid today in engineering as well as in finance and in business.

Today our levers are not simply a large plank of wood. They can be leveraging the ideas and wisdom of others as well as the finance of others. It is one of the many reasons why wifey and I love investing in property. We can get some excellent leverage financially and from other’s experience. Of late, many of my clients keep talking about how busy they are, which is a great thing. But what is actually happening?

Too often people will get caught up in a “Ground Hog Day” type of cycle. You know the one – you wake up, go to work, come home late, say hi to your family, have dinner, watch TV, go to bed and wake up, go to work…. and so on.

With the new, ever invasive technology it is getting worse. Emails are ALWAYS available. Work resources are now accessible everywhere. There is no OFF switch.

I have long been a believer in having a hobby. Something you do to give you energy, excitement and a connection with others. Something that feeds your soul. Do you have one Friends?

My friend and business collaborator Tanya is many things, and singing is one of her hobbies. Last night Wifey and I were privileged to see Tanya and her class graduate from a Jazz Singing intensive at the Paris Cat (in Melbourne). There were some great performances, some nervous performances, some shaky performances but they gave their best and it was pretty good. Most importantly the energy of achieving something for themselves in front of a crowd of 60 people was bubbling around us.

DOES IT HURT?

Last night, Wifey and I cooked up a Lankan curry feast for a group of friends. One couple brought their 10 and 14 year old kids with them. Now wifey and I like a bit of kick in our curries and even though we tried to make tame ones last night, a couple of them were a bit strong.

Our friends 10 year old had never had authentic curry. He was keen to try something new. Now we warned him that some were a bit hot and if it was too hot to have some yoghurt or a banana (water really doesn’t help). So he knew it could cause him some pain but he wanted to try anyway. He started on the potato curry which was the really hot one. A few tears welled up, his face turned red and he went for the yoghurt big time. But he also kept his good humor and then went for some cooler and less spicy foods. A great effort and kudos to him.

Things Are Changing

The only constant is change.

We have read that, heard that and seen that so many times, yet still we get surprised by change. I was speaking to a large management team on Saturday about change (among other things) and they proudly told me that they all embrace change.

Upon further investigation, it turns out most of them ALWAYS sleep on the same side of the bed, have THEIR CHAIR at the dining table and in the lounge room and when they go to the monthly meeting they nearly always sit in the same spot. That doesn’t mean they are no good at change but it may mean that they struggle to embrace change more than they think.

What about you Friends? How are you with change?

By the way, as you can see from this email I have changed the way the weekly newsletter is sent. This should be a lot more efficient, timely and easier for me. For you there is very little change. You still get the fabulous thoughts every Monday (or Tuesday if I forget).

This was not at the conference but you get the idea!

I have spent four days at the National Speakers conference. It’s my professional association so even though I was the Master of Ceremonies at the Gala Dinner and had a job as the “Voice of God” throughout the conference, it is also the time to go behind the scenes of my skill, my business model, my approach and do some fine tuning.

Staying at the conference hotel is also a bit of a shock. Hotel bathrooms seem to have more mirrors than any other surface. So after the daily shower, I was confronted with myself, warts and all, from all possible angles. Now I don’t know about you, but having that kind of perspective of myself is quite uncomfortable. My vision is drawn to my defects or PERCEIVED defects and things that I don’t like about myself. The conference was the same for my business.

It was too easy to see and hear what others were doing and think, “I’m not doing that. I should be doing what they are doing. There is something else I am not doing right. Look at all the stuff I haven’t done or achieved.”

From personal experience, that is not healthy and it gets you nowhere.

After a detailed discussion with my business partner, we have drawn a line in the sand (a sentiment reinforced by one of the speakers) and will only look to the future, acknowledge the past and act in the present. So there are a few bits about my body and my business that I am not a fan of. Rather than sitting on my pity pot and thinking about them, it is time for action and change. I can accept where I am at, warts and all. Now it is time for the action to meet the goals and the focus.

Can They Hear You?

Too often people stay quiet. They have an idea, a thought, an opinion, a need or a want but it goes unsaid.

Their internal voice can say, “don’t want to make a fool of myself”, “the boss will know better”, “they probably have already thought of that”, “who am I to say these things?” or “I couldn’t be bothered trying to be heard.”

You owe it to yourself to speak out and speak up. Even if no action is taken, the act of speaking up is a huge boost to your esteem.

Now that we are in the fifth week of the New Year, I need to ask, do your systems support you? I am not just talking about computer systems, but your manual systems and processes as well.

Michael Gerber is the king of business systems. His book “The E-Myth Revisited” has some simple yet masterful comments and ideas on how you let your systems run the business and your people run the systems.

So how can you systemise more? From the simple addition of check lists on order forms, to a weekly structure for your time or simply having custom lead cards when you next exhibit or are sponsoring an event. The systems make your job easier and free you up for more strategic work (or holidays!)

I have had the last couple of weeks off. I spent the time relaxing, celebrating, planning, resting and enjoying. I feel refreshed and ready to embrace whatever 2013 holds for me.

I have seen a lot of blurb about New Year’s resolutions. Can I humbly suggest that you don’t waste your time on them? Most people get excited, make commitments and then simply get on with their life. I have found it more valuable to learn from the past, plan for the future and act in the day.

It is ALMOST singable to the original tune!! Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get it perfect but do act on as many as you can. Carry the spirit of Christmas and giving with you as you do.

What Are You Up To?

One of the most common questions around the work place is “So what are you up to?”It’s usually the boss, a colleague or a friend just asking what is happening.
When it comes to work, there would be 4 key answers I would be looking for:

I am servicing the client and providing what they have paid for or assisting someone else in the firm to do that
I am getting more prospects to consider us
I am converting a prospect to a sale
I am looking for ways to increase the sale to a customer – maybe a repeat sale or maybe an increase in the sale amount or maybe building a product to sell.

Anything else is just busy work.
If what you are doing does not related to one of these four things I would have to ask why are you doing it.
