It’s the Day For It

Forgive me but I am confused. There are just too many “Days” floating around.

This week it has been Pay It Forward Day, Earth Day, Easter Day(s), Anzac Day, and I am sure there have been other days, ribbons to wear, causes to contribute to, and ideas to believe in.

ARRRRRRGGGHHH!!!

Here is what I long for. A world without “Days”. A world where we care enough about each other, care enough about where we live, care about who we work with, care about those less fortunate and, well, basically just Care.

If we just cared a little more and showed that we care in our actions, if we considered the impact of what we did and who it would affect, I think this world would be a better place to live.

So how will you show you care? It’s the Day for it!

It’s a Love Hate Relationship

This is Lester. I love him (not in the biblical sense!) and HATE him all in the same breath.

As you probably know from seeing any image of me, I am a Nutritional Over Achiever.

One of my mantras has always been “Happy Healthy Hundred.” I want to live to be a hundred years old but be happy and healthy when I get there. Being a nutritional overachiever will limit the possibility of that happening and while mantras are great, a mantra alone won’t get you there. While I am waiting for the Universe to provide, others are getting off their backside and making things happen.

So I finally bit the bullet and joined the Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre (it’s a fantastic facility so if you live in the area, check it out)

I love the idea of carrying less body fat. I love the idea of living a medication free life. I love the idea of bouncing around on stage inspiring people without puffing. I love the idea of taking my dog for a run (have you seen how fast toy poodles are?). I HATE the idea of dieting. I HATE the idea of exercising. I HATE the idea of hurting after a workout.

So here is what I am doing, I am focusing on what I love and not what I hate. I am engaging that quite rare sense of Delayed Gratification. I get it will take me a while to build my fitness levels back up and drop some of the body fat so I am focussing on the benefits of what that will give me rather than the short term pain I have to endure.

To get me there, Lester took me to task.

I could only hobble, not walk for three days! I was cursing him and he only laughed at me when I told him what I thought of him. So even though I make a lot of noise about it, I am still focussed on the long term payoff and not the short term pain.

I am embracing the concept of “It doesn’t hurt once the pain goes.”

While this applies to me with my current level of fitness and the rather cruel Lester, does this situation exist for you at all?

Maybe not with fitness but with a skill, an education level, your personal investments, your relationships or another are of your life? Where do you need to engage an expert who you can help you achieve the goals you want even though there may be some short term pain to get there?

Basically who do you need to Love and Hate? Go find them and make it happen.

Who Has Time For That?

One of the lessons I learn’t early on in life was that I don’t have the time, energy or inclination to make all the mistakes I need to.

Mistakes are one of the biggest and best ways to learn how to do and how not to do things.

I don’t know about you, but who has time to make that many mistakes?

I am a big fan of learning from the mistakes and lessons of others. It saves me pain and accelerates my success.

It is for this reason I have set up Entrepreneurs In Action

It is a regular podcast of interviews with successful Entrepreneurs. The first episode is out there and the first interview is launching tomorrow.

You can subscribe with your iTunes account at www.EntrepreneursInAction.com.au or create a Podomatic account at http://warwickmerry.podomatic.com/

When you next make a mistake or have a “learning experience” make sure it is not just you who learns from it. Share it with people who need to know because when it comes to learning everything by doing it yourself, who has time for that?

The One Word that Fast Tracks You To Success

A client has asked meno

“How do you say no?
When you’re too busy, you’re weighed down, your priorities rule you, but you just want to say yes to everyone. Don’t want to let anyone down. You bend your life to fit them in and then you lose sleep because it just doesn’t all fit.
How do you say no?”

No is the most productive word in the world.
Danielle Storey, the Million Dollar Client Relationship expert insists that “No opens the door to yes” and that has been my experience also.

So why don’t we say it more?

There is a common saying that if you want to get something done, give it to a busy person. This is built on the concept that they won’t say NO.

There are a couple of elements to this that we need to examine:

1) Our Image
We don’t want to be seen as someone who lets another down. We want to say yes because if we don’t we think that someone else will think poorly of us. That someone else could be a friend, a family member, a boss, a colleague, a new friend, an old friend or even a random stranger.

The first thing you MUST take on board is this. What other people think of you is none of your business.

They may think poorly of you but if they are someone who truly values you, they will accept whatever your response is because they will know you have a lot more going on in your life than what they know about. Do you really want to spend time with someone who gets upset because you won’t do them a favour? You are worth more than that.

2) Who is Asking
My experience is the difficulty to say NO depends on who is asking. It can be very difficult to say no to a family member. They also have the advantage of more power when it comes to emotional manipulation purely because of their history with you.
The same can be said for a Boss or a client. For some reason we think our job or the contract is at risk. As I will explain later, they both actually WANT you to say No. They just don’t realise it.

3) Self Belief
It is so important to realise that you are worth saying no for. Too often we can see how others should say No more often but can’t see that we are in the same boat. Trust me, you are truly worth it. Your time is more important to you than it is to anyone else. Your own plans need your attention. Your own desires and needs are also important. Do not sacrifice yourself and your own needs and wants unnecessarily for others. Being a martyr is not as good as people want you to believe it is!

I love what the flight attendants say every time I am on a plane. “When the mask falls from the ceiling, please be sure to fit your own before you assist others.”

If you don’t look after your own needs, no one else will. You have to be ok first before you can be of service to others.

4) They Want you to Say No
Without realising it, other people want you to say No.

Most people operate on the basis that you are a mature person and when you have reached capacity you will say so. To keep saying yes when it is costing you in terms of time, energy and even sanity is not fair to you or to the business or family unit. So even though they may seem like they don’t want to hear you say no, they will be much happier you did that to come to them at the deadline and say, “Sorry I didn’t get it done.”

To get a bit hippy for a moment, saying no is one of the biggest acts of self-love that you can do.

By all means, please do things for other people. Please give of yourself generously but not at the expense of yourself.

You owe it to yourself to say NO. It is the most productive and most powerful word in the world.

There Is No Escape!

There Is NO Escape!

This is one of the scenes from where I have been working for the last four days. Not a bad pool!

I was fortunate enough to be hosting a conference at Sanctuary Cove in Queensland.

Too many people can’t wait to get to places like this to escape their life. They seem to feel that either their business, job or relationship (or worst case scenario, their entire life) is so bad that they need to escape it for a holiday. It takes a few days to chill out and feel the sense of escape and then half way through they remember what they are trying to escape and start to take on the stress again.

There is NO Escape!

Your life is yours to create, so if you are not enjoying it or feel you need to escape it, change it! Change jobs, sell your business, work on your relationship, do whatever you need to do to address your issue. You can’t avoid your life forever or you will die trying. The quickest way around is through so face your stuff and live a life you don’t want to escape from.

See you in paradise!

Grease is the Word (in Marketing)

Wifey (her official title and one that she loves and fully endorses so no more emails on this please) and I took our niece to see Grease for her birthday. It was a fun night and many of us chose to make it a sing-a-long.

But what was impressive was their marketing approach, specifically in their casting.

As you have probably guessed, the thing that makes a show successful is getting an audience – it’s obvious really.

So how can you get a big audience in? It’s simple, cast big names. But big names cost money so you can’t have too many.

So why not cast big names for small but key roles and less famous people for the majority of the roles.

Grease is a great case in point. If you go to the Grease website and check out the cast, the first two are Danny and Sandy (in this case, well known Rob Mills and lesser known Greta Scarlett).

The next listed are Anthony Callea/ John Paul Young (both playing the same role in different cities), two lesser known in the roles of Kenickie and Rizo (Rizo was the absolute star in my opinion) and finally Todd McKenny, Val Lehman (from Prisoner) and Bert Newtown.  Under these prominent listings it is merely a roll call of everyone else on the show.

Here is the interesting thing, the role Anthony, John Paul Young, and Todd McKenny play is ……. sing one song!

Val Lehman does some great crowd warmup, has about 5 minutes on stage and Bert does similar.  In all honesty, Bert struggled with his role.

So the biggest names hardly have anything to do with the show, their main role is “Sell Tickets!”

The show has been a huge success in Melbourne and I have no doubt it is the pulling power of some of these names that has done it.

So how can you add some Grease to your marketing?

Are You On Focus?

Now days with emails, text messages, social media, guru’s popping off the internet left, right and centre, it can be hard to stay focussed on what counts.

I have just come back from 3 days attending and hosting the National Speakers Association of Australia conference. Nearly everyone I spoke to struggled with BSO’s.

Bright Shiny Objects

What about you and what you are working towards? It doesn’t matter if it is a personal or a professional goal, it is too easy to get distracted. So stay on FOCUS.
Stick some posters up of what you want to achieve. Have some accountability buddies to keep you on track. DO WHATEVER IT TAKES.

The Driver and The Dealer

The Driver and the Dealer

Many people are getting ready for 2014. They are planning, reviewing and getting all of their ducks in a row.

As you start to focus on 2014, don’t forget the Driver and the Dealer. They are two key players in your success.

The Driver is all emotion. It allows you to tap in to the “WHY” for the year. Why do you want to earn the money, achieve the goals, or conquer the mountain. The Driver will show you the pleasure, the benefits, the reason that you do what you do. The Driver will set the direction of where you are headed.

The Dealer is all fact. It is all about the “WHAT”. What do I need to do next, what resources do I need, what is the logical sequence. The Dealer is loaded with reason and logic and it is the Dealer that will get you where you want to go.

The issue is that they are not interchangable. Particularly when you come across your first problem on the path. The Driver doesn’t help because the “why” is not as important as the “What are we going to do about it”.

As you plan for 2014, make sure you are clear on your Driver and have your Dealer well tuned and ready to go.
